Kriegsspiel for academies and military schools
Kriegsspiel offers military schools the web edition's Instructor Mode for a class of up to 30, available now, and an institutional edition, the TDG trainer, that runs on the institution's own network without internet and is in pilot.
Two editions
Web edition
- Instructor Mode: one instructor runs the same battle with a class of up to 30 trainees, who decide on their own phones.
- Everyone decides in the same situation; the instructor sees the spread of choices live and debriefs the class from it.
- Every battle has a one-page printable TDG for rooms without devices.
- The adjudication formula and its factor weights are published.
- After the battle, the after-action review compares each decision with the real commander’s and with doctrine.
- Priced as the Group plan (one instructor and up to 30 trainees). During the beta everything is free.

Institutional edition: the TDG trainer
- Installed on the institution’s own network; runs without an internet connection.
- Trainees write orders with intent instead of picking from given options.
- Reports arrive late, incomplete and sometimes wrong; there is no god’s-eye view.
- An engine adjudicates with published factors and modifiers.
- The instructor runs the session from an instructor console that shows the whole battlefield.
- The after-action review shows what the enemy saw as well.
- Security review documents and an audit log are provided.
Pilot
The institutional edition is piloted for one term with up to 100 trainees, free or at cost. In exchange, we analyse anonymised learning-effect data together, and you consent to a published case study.
- Kick-off: Together we choose the course and classes, the session schedule and the learning effects to measure. Installation on your network and instructor training are part of the pilot.
- 4–6 repeated sessions: The same class runs the 50-minute lesson four to six times during the term.
- Joint report: We analyse the anonymised learning-effect data together and write a report.
- Decision: At the end of the term we decide together whether to continue.
After the pilot, the institutional edition is an annual licence by trainee seats, with no limit on instructors. Quotes on request by email.
A 50-minute lesson
One class period. The outline follows the institutional edition; Instructor Mode in the web edition can run in the same order.
| Step | Time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Prepare | 5 min | Read the situation, mission and ground; ask questions. |
| Orders | 5 min | Decide and write orders. In the web edition, pick a course of action and note the reasoning. |
| Execute, report, re-decide | 15–20 min | Reports come in; decide again three to five times. |
| After-action review | 15–20 min | Discuss the spread of decisions and the adjudication; in the institutional edition, also what the enemy saw. |
FAQ
Does it need the internet?
The web edition does. The institutional edition is installed on the institution’s own network and runs without an internet connection.
What data leaves the institution?
With the institutional edition, none. It has no telemetry, and orders, reports and reviews stay on the institution’s server. The web edition handles data as set out in its privacy policy.
Can we use our own scenarios?
The institutional edition includes a scenario editor. How to build and bring in your own scenarios, and how much support we give, can be discussed in the pilot.
What does it cost?
The web edition is the Group plan, free during the beta. The institutional pilot is free or at cost; after it, the annual licence is quoted by trainee seats.
How do we start?
Instructor Mode in the web edition can be opened now (Google sign-in required). For an institutional pilot, email honeybadger@hbcrossborder.com with the subject "Pilot inquiry" and your institution, course and expected number of trainees.
